Now for those of us who follow up on boxing, we know McGregor for one main thing. And no, I’m not talking about his ability to fight. Yes, you guessed right. His trash talk. While McGregor is one of boxing history champion fighters, a lot of his fame arguably goes to his ability to wile up his opponents with his tongue, hence his nickname “Notorious.”
McGregor has a lot of fans in favour of his trash talk; apparently, Mayweather is not one of those. In a recent interview at Fight Hype, when Mayweather was asked about McGregor’s success, he contributed it to racism.
(Oh no, here we go, ANOTHER black person pulling the race card. Now, don’t get me wrong, I believe racism still exists. To not believe that would mean to not believe that global warming is a thing. But then again…there are people who don’t believe that…but I digress. )
Mayweather is upset that when he trash talks, he is considered as “cocky and arrogant” while McGregor is praised for his. He claims that people are “biased” and that “racism still exists.”
No denying that people are biased, but let’s look at a few points:
1.) Yes, trash talking is McGregor’s thing, but from the strings of videos that you can find of McGregor trash talking, I’d say “trash talk” is an understatement. This man unleashes fire and brimstone on his opponents. However, to say that McGregor does not get flack for his trash talking would be a lie. In those same videos, the comments section would give evidence of that. A lot of videos about McGregor’s trash talk have a high dislike figure. But what can I say? It’s a great marketing tool. It works.
2.) Even though McGregor trash talks, there is a sense that he doesn’t necessarily mean everything he said. Looking at his videos, his trash talk is genius and witty. Come on, have you seen those YouTube videos? Hilarious. Mayweather does too trash talk his opponents, but let’s face it, they’re not nearly as witty as McGregor’s. Some may even say that his insults are basic.
3.) McGregor finishes his opponents. He knocks them out. It is said that Mayweather is a point fighter. While extremely skilled, many people think his style of fighting is boring.
4.) Fan-base. McGregor is Irish. Irish fans are the bomb. They’re always hype. His Irish fan base shoots his fame through the roof.
I’m sorry; Mayweather comes off as a bit jealous. Racism. Yes, in today’s world, if a white person has any success in life, it’s because of their race, and not their ability to achieve that thing. Yes, in 2016, let’s throw meritocracy out the window because why not?
McGregor’s response to Mayweather was absolutely genius. The fighter had this to say on his Instagram:
“Floyd Mayweather, don’t ever bring race into my success again. I am am an Irishman. My people have been oppressed our entire existence. And still very much are. I understand the feeling of prejudice. It is a feeling that is deep in my blood. In my family’s long history of warfare there was a time where just having the name ‘McGregor’ was punishable by death. Do not ever put me in a bracket like this again.”
I’ll just leave that right there.
